CyberKnife® Stereotactic Radiosurgery

The CyberKnife Radiosurgery System was introduced at Northwest Community Healthcare in June, 2006. To effectively treat tumors, the CyberKnife uses a combination of a robotic arm, linear accelerator, and image guided technology. It has the ability to locate and monitor the position of a tumor within the body and compensate for patient movement during treatment. NCH was one of the first in Illinois to offer this most advanced non-invasive treatment for cancer. Learn more about CyberKnife Radiosurgery.

While other areas of the body may be treatable in the future using this new technology, currently it is possible to treat tumors located in the following sites:

  • Brain tumors (primary and metastatic)
  • Spine metastases
  • Lung tumors
  • Locally advanced pancreatic tumors
  • Liver metastases
  • Intracranial benign tumors, including acoustic neuromas, meningiomas, and AVMs

The da Vinci® Surgical System— Enhancing Surgical Capabilities and Improving Clinical Outcomes

Northwest Community Hospital is proud to offer the da Vinci Surgical System as a leader in the rapidly emerging field of robotic-assisted surgery. Clinical studies support the use of the da Vinci Surgical System as an effective tool for minimally invasive surgeries, including myomectomy and prostate cancer surgery. By enhancing surgical capabilities with da Vinci, Northwest Community provides leading-edge treatments and improved clinical outcomes, and helps patients return to active and productive lives. Siemens SOMATOM Definition Dual Source CT System

In its continuing mission to provide excellence in Cardiac Care, Northwest Community Hospital has dedicated the new Gerald Gurtz Advanced Diagnostics Suite, which features the Siemens SOMATOM Definition Dual Source CT System. Only one of three such systems in the Chicago area, the Definition CT Scanner offers many new applications for coronary CT angiography. "It produces higher image resolution and faster speed than the most advanced single-source CT systems," says Gary Skiba, Vice President of Regional Services.

4-D Wide Bore CT Scanner PET/CT Scan

Northwest Community Hospital uses the latest technologies to detect cancerous tumors. The PET/CT scanner integrates PET (positron emission tomography) and CT (computerized tomography) technologies into one exam to produce both anatomical and biological images. This hybrid imaging machine enables doctors to make more precise diagnoses in a timely manner, and to better plan the type of treatment that will work best for the patient. The types of cancer that a PET/CT scanner is most effective in detecting are breast, colorectal, head and neck, lung, lymphoma, ovarian and skin. Learn more about Cancer Care treatments.

Prostate Brachytherapy: Charting the Course for a Bright Future

A diagnosis of prostate cancer may seem overwhelming. Nevertheless, you can take comfort from advances in prostate cancer treatment and the accompanying increase in successful treatment statistics. Brachytherapy is available for early-stage prostate cancers. An expert physician places tiny radioactive seeds inside the prostate, where they kill cancer cells with little harm to healthy tissues. Learn more about brachytherapy.
