The most advanced approach for removing gallbladders

NCH has taken minimally-invasive surgery to the next level. In spring 2012, NCH became the first hospital in the northwest suburbs of Chicago and among the first in Illinois to use the da Vinci robot to remove the gallbladder with one tiny incision at the belly button, leaving patients virtually free of scars.

As compared to conventional laparoscopic cholecystectomies (removal of the gallbladder), the benefits of the da Vinci Single-Site™ cholecystectomy procedure include:

  • less noticeable scarring
  • potentially shorter hospital stay, with many patients able to go home the very same day
  • faster recovery
  • minimal pain

Traditionally, surgeons make three to five incisions to remove the gallbladder, but with the technically advanced Single-Site approach, only a one-inch incision is necessary. Using the advanced robotic technology and specialized instruments of da Vinci gives surgeons a greater level of precision and superior visualization, reducing the overall complexity of this procedure.

Like other robotic procedures performed at NCH, the surgeon sits comfortable at a console during the procedure, viewing a 3D, high-definition image of the patient's anatomy. The surgeon uses controls below the viewer to move the instrument arms and camera. In real-time, the system translates the surgeon's hand, wrist and finger movements into more precise movements of the miniaturized instruments inside the patient.

Most people who require gallbladder removal are candidates for robotic single incision surgery. According to the American College of Surgeons, surgery is the recommended treatment for gallbladder pain from gallstones and non-functioning gallbladders.
