Last month, Northwest Community Hospital (NCH) expanded its guidelines for accepting direct admission patients to the Hospital. This change expands the timeframe for "having seen a patient in the office" beyond 24 hours. Now, physicians and their patients have greater flexibility when preparing to use NCH's Direct Admit Unit (DAU).
The admitting physician can make arrangements for a patient to go directly to the DAU by calling the Admitting Phone Line at 847.618.4500. A new automated greeting system was recently added to the phone line, and includes options that connect doctors directly with the patient flow nurse coordinator.
Doctors can choose from three methods for giving inpatient orders: CareLink CPOE, fax (847.618.7998) or hard-copy delivery with the patient. Important information regarding admitting privileges and physician-to-physician acceptance of the patient will be validated on the initial call. The goal is to streamline dialogue and decrease the number of phone calls between physicians and clinicians.
Patients and their families will be directed to the Hospital's Emergency Room (ER) triage area in order to identify themselves as a direct admission patient. Once registered with a quick check of identification, patients will be escorted to the DAU. Admission assessments, orders and care will be initiated in the DAU prior to being transferred to an inpatient unit. Patients presenting to the DAU in an unstable condition will be transferred to the Emergency Room for evaluation and treatment.
With construction of the new and expanded ER complete, the DAU was relocated back to its original location in Pod E, which is adjacent to the ER. For more information about the Direct Admit Unit, please contact Patient Flow and Staffing Manager Jean Altizer, RN, at 847.618.7932.
