NCH Stroke Program Again Earns Key Award for Quality of Care

For the second year in a row Northwest Community Hospital (NCH) has received the "Get With The Guidelines® Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award" from the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association. With this designation, NCH continues to be among the nation's top hospitals for quality excellence in stroke care.

To receive the award, NCH achieved an 85 percent compliance with all "Get With The Guidelines" indicators for two consecutive 12-month intervals, and a 75 percent compliance with six of 10 stroke quality measures.

These measures include aggressive use of medications such as tPA, antithrombotics, anticoagulation therapy, DVT prophylaxis, cholesterol reducing drugs and smoking cessation, all aimed at reducing death and disability while improving the lives of stroke patients.

"We are fortunate to have a multi-disciplinary stroke care program, with access to specialists and advanced tools to optimize care for our patients with stroke, intracranial hemorrhage, subarachnoid hemorrhage, brain aneurysm and other acute neurological disorders," says Laura Goldstein, MD, Stroke Program medical director and chief of Neurology.

In addition, NCH's designation as a Primary Stroke Center by the Joint Commissions since 2006 means the Hospital's stroke care encompasses all the critical elements to achieve long-term success in improving stroke outcomes.
