In late 2010, Northwest Community Healthcare (NCH) adopted Computerized Provider Order Entry (CPOE), a component of the CareLink system that enables doctors to enter orders electronically for their patients. The phased transition to CPOE was smooth thanks to the participation and support of the medical staff. To ensure the best possible patient care, plans are underway to streamline the process so that all orders are in one location.
A tentative date of February 29, 2012 has been set for the removal of paper order sheets from the patient chart. However, order sheets specific to complex orders not available in CPOE such as chemotherapy, hyperal and epidural will remain on the patient’s chart. Outside of these few complex orders, the expectation is for medical staff members, mid-level providers and NCH clinicians to electronically enter all orders on bedded patients.
NCH is committed to helping the medical staff transition to electronic order entry. Therefore, as the paper order removal date nears, physicians are encouraged to work with clinical staff to develop their comfort level and electronic order entry skills.
