U.S. News & World Report has released its 2012-13 Best Hospitals list, and Northwest Community Hospital (NCH) is among the more than 720 hospitals (out of the roughly 5,000 hospitals in the country) to make this year's list. Hospitals were evaluated on overall care and in specific areas of medicine, and top performers were ranked nationally and/or regionally within the state and select metropolitan areas, including Chicagoland.
According to U.S. News & World Report, NCH is No. 40 in the nation in the medical specialty of Ear, Nose and Throat. In a review of the top-ranking hospitals in the region, NCH comes in at No. 7 in the Chicago metro area and No. 8 in the state of Illinois. NCH also demonstrated a high level of performance in the areas of cancer, gastroenterology, geriatrics, gynecology, nephrology, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopedics, pulmonology, and urology.
"It's always rewarding to see our efforts prominently recognized as we continue to focus on what's best for patients who walk through our doors," says Bruce Crowther, NCH's President and CEO. "Our multidisciplinary medical care teams of physicians and clinical care specialists are committed to comprehensive, patient-centered care that not only addresses an individual's current healthcare needs in the hospital, but also focuses on wellness strategies and building healthy lifestyles."
A majority of the 16 medical specialties ranked by U.S. News & World Report were evaluated on hospital performance scores related to patient safety, survival rate, reputation with physicians, and other quality of care measures. Kirk Clark, MD who is NCH's chief of Surgery, says the Hospital has done a great job bringing together the resources, technologies, and expertise that go into building a successful and patient-centered medical and surgical ENT program.
"At NCH, otolaryngologists have access to state-of-the-art surgical equipment, a dedicated ENT surgical team and excellent anesthesiologists," Dr. Clark says, adding that a large percentage of ENT related procedures are performed on children and it's crucial to have specially trained pediatric anesthesiologists on hand as part of the care team.
Dr. Clark also is mindful that NCH's national recognition in ENT care is a result of the strong relationships he and the other otolaryngologists have developed with physicians on staff at NCH.
