New Urinary Catheter Protocol
On March 15, Northwest Community Hospital (NCH) implemented a urinary catheter protocol with a goal to decrease catheter associated urinary tract infections. The protocol was approved by the Medical Executive Committee.
The urinary catheter protocol provides criteria for the initiation and continuance of a urinary catheter. It also addresses criteria for determining when the nurse can discontinue the catheter without needing a specific order to do so. Bladder scanning is also included in the protocol (i.e., when the nurse should scan and actions to take dependent upon the scan findings).
An order set has been created in CareLink for catheter insertion and maintenance. In addition, a Urinary Catheter Protocol and Bladder Scanning Infolink has been added to the urinary catheter order outline.
