Leveraging Clinical Trials for Growth and to Enhance Care
Northwest Community Hospital (NCH) shares its commitment to deliver high quality patient care with the doctors, nurses and other medical professionals that are actively participating in a wide range of research studies and clinical trials. For more than 30 years the Hospital's Institutional Review Board (IRB) has facilitated hundreds of clinical trial research studies, giving physicians the support they need to evaluate current or emerging medical practices and technologies right here in Arlington Heights.
Richard Regan, MD, chairman of the Hospital's IRB, explains how clinical trials benefit not only patients, but also the physicians leading these studies. "While clinical trials afford patients access to progressive interventions, participating medical staff members have an opportunity to advance their knowledge and to be seen as forward-thinking among their peers and the greater community," he says.
At NCH, dozens of clinical trials are conducted each year by physicians and nurses who examine the safety, effectiveness and/or outcomes associated with specific treatment protocols or medications that may become the future standard of care. Some areas of focus explored at NCH include cancer, orthopedics, cardiology, neuro-interventional radiology and stroke care. The shared goal among researchers is to be on the forefront of research and to identify new and better ways to care for their patients.
Each clinical trial conducted at NCH is governed by the Hospital's IRB, a multidisciplinary team of medical professionals and community members. The mission of the IRB is to review, approve and closely monitor clinical trials to ensure studies are ethical and that the rights and safety of participants are upheld. The IRB also serves as a resource to physicians by providing guidance, education and advice on ethical and regulatory issues.
