ACS Surgical Risk Calculator

The American College of Surgeon’s National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS NSQIP) is proud to announce the newly available ACS NSQIP Surgical Risk Calculator

The free calculator estimates important, patient-specific postoperative risks and acts as a tool for improving shared-decision making and informed consent. The calculator uses ACS NSQIP data from more than 1.4 million cases and 393 hospitals. The calculator also:

  • Covers multiple surgical subspecialties, nearly all CPT codes
  • Generates patient-specific risk scores using 21 preoperative factors
  • Includes predictions for 8 major outcomes

The Surgeon Adjustment Score (SAS) allows surgeons to adjust estimated risks based on their clinical assessment. The surgical risk calculator estimates the chance of an unfavorable outcome, such as a complication or death, after surgery. The risk is estimated based upon information the patient gives to the healthcare provider about prior health history. The estimates are calculated using data from a large number of patients who had a surgical procedure similar to the one the patient may have.
