Stomach upset is a condition that most everyone experiences at one time or another. Symptoms of stomach upset that last longer than a few days, or are accompanied by unexplained change in bowel habits, chronic diarrhea or constipation, persistent blood in the stool or rectal bleeding, persistent abdominal pain, unexpected or sudden weight loss, or chronic tiredness or unexplained fatigue, require a visit to the doctor. Your doctor may suggest you visit a gastroenterologist. Your doctor may also schedule a diagnostic procedure. One of the most common tests is called an endoscopy procedure. The Gastroenterology Center performs a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for patients with gastrointestinal and pulmonary diseases. This new facility accommodates the large volume of procedures performed each year at Northwest Community while giving attention to patients’ comfort, convenience, and privacy.

One of the most frequently performed endoscopic procedures is colonoscopy, in which the colon and large intestine are examined using an endoscope—a flexible tube with a light and lens on the tip. Colonoscopy is recommended for ALL adults age 50 and over and in younger people with a family history of colon cancer. Colonoscopy is effective in detecting polyps in the colon that can lead to cancer. Regular colonoscopy is one of the most effective ways to prevent colon cancer or detect it in the early, most treatable stage. To read more, proceed to the Endoscopy Procedures page.
