Now there is a safer, more affordable screening for early lung cancer. This quick and painless, low-dose CT scan enables doctors to search for signs of lung cancer at an earlier stage—when it's most treatable. Better yet, they might declare your lungs free of any cancer at all, so you can breathe easier. And, if you need to quit smoking, NCH has the tools and support you need to be successful, such as smoking cessation programs.

NCH quickly became one of the first hospitals in the Chicago area to launch a CT lung scan program in early 2011 for those who are at high risk for lung cancer.
Traditional X-rays provide a 2-D view of the chest, showing the lungs as well as the heart, bone and soft tissue—all of which can mask abnormalities. Low-dose computed tomography (CT) lung scans create a detailed, 3-D image using a low dose of radiation, giving doctors a clearer, unobstructed view of the lungs—and the ability to detect tiny nodules often not visible on a chest X-ray.
Since radiation is involved in all imaging, this scan is not for everyone. You must meet all of the following criteria to qualify for the Early Lung Cancer Screening Program:
