Classes and Screening

Classes

NCH provides a wide range of classes, programs, clinics, screenings and special events for the community. Our goal is to provide you and your family with the resources and knowledge to help you to stay healthy.

Classes are held at various times throughout the year on topics ranging from prenatal classes & education (or childbirth and children's health) to diabetes management and healthy aging. Most of the classes require pre-registration. You can register for NCH events, classes and screenings by accessing our Online Events Guide

Of if you prefer, call HealthConnection at 1-844-NCH-HEALTH. Representatives are available Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

In addition, the NCH Wellness Center offers traditional and specialty fitness classes, aquatics programs, nutritional counseling, and personal training services for individuals of all ages and fitness levels. Classes include yoga, tai chi, Zumba dance, cycling, body strengthening, conditioning and much more. Classes are open to both members and non-members but registration is required. Wellness Center classes can joined at any point during the current session and your class fee will be prorated to reflect the number of classes missed. See a list of the current Wellness Center classes.

Screenings and Clinics

Cholesterol screenings

Cholesterol screenings include a complete lipid profile: total cholesterol, HDL, LDL and triglycerides. Screening is done by finger-stick with immediate results. A 12 to 15 hour fast prior to screening is required. NCH offers these screenings for a nominal fee, either quarterly or bi-annually. Check the Online Events Guide for upcoming dates and times.

Skin cancer screenings

Free skin cancer screenings are offered annually, and are sponsored by NCH's Cancer Services department. During the screening, an examination of the skin on a particular area of concern of your body (for example, your face, back, or neck) is performed by a board-certified, NCH medical staff dermatologist. Registration is required.

Prostate cancer screenings

Because prostate cancer often has no early warning symptoms, it's important to have regular screening tests to find prostate cancer in its early stages, when it's still curable. Don't wait. Consult your personal physician and make sure you get checked regularly. NCH offers bi-annual prostate cancer screenings. For a nominal fee you will receive a blood test and physical exam by a board certified urologist.

Low-dose CT lung screenings for high-risk smokers

NCH was among the first hospital in the Chicago area to launch a program that provides low-dose CT lung screenings for high-risk smokers. The NCH program comes in response to a breakthrough national study that found that low-dose CT scans of current and former heavy smokers reduced their risk of death from lung cancer by 20 percent due to earlier detection of the disease. Similar to the national study, NCH patients 50 to 74 who have smoked at least one pack a day for 30 years or two packs a day for 15 years are eligible, as well as ex-smokers who have quit within the last 15 years. This is not a clinical trial and insurance does not currently cover this screening. For more information on these lung screenings, call Juli Aistars at 847-618-6572. To schedule a lung screening, call 847-618-3700.  See more information about quitting smoking.
