Open Heart Magic for Children

Specially trained volunteer magicians visit children weekly at NCH’s pediatric inpatient unit and emergency room. The magicians teach kids tricks—and make them laugh!

Animal-Assisted Therapy Program

In 2016, 80 specially trained dog-and-handler teams comforted patients of all ages with over 12,000 friendly visits.

Community Outreach
Giving to Community Outreach

Community Nursing

NCH’s community nurses are available for community members who need assistance with chronic disease management, health education, understanding discharge plans and to provide referrals.

Mobile Dental Clinic

Provides preventive and restorative oral health services to individuals and families who are without dental insurance and who live at less than 200 percent of the federal poverty level.

WINGS at NCH

With Women in Need Growing Stronger, NCH provides counseling, education and referrals to patients, staff and community members affected by domestic violence. In 2016, 400 clients received services.

Cancer Patient Assistance Fund

In 2016, 35 struggling cancer patients received $29,000 in emergency grants to cover basic living expenses so they could focus on their treatment and recovery.

Gift-A-Mammogram

Covers cost of diagnostic mammograms and follow-up procedures for 100 uninsured women annually—and detected cancer in several of them.

Behavioral Health Navigator

Provides bedside care in NCH’s Behavioral Health Unit and support services in the community for uninsured and under-resourced community members.

Community Health Worker

Provides culturally sensitive education, support and linkages to services for Spanish speaking community members.

Charitable Prescription Program

Provides under-resourced and homeless individuals with free prescriptions needed to address health conditions and maintain their health status.

Heart Failure Clinic

With the backing of generous donors, NCH has created a clinic for heart failure patients at our Mount Prospect Medical Center to help them better manage their condition and enjoy a higher quality of life. Learn more about the Atherton Heart Failure Clinic

Heart Monitors

Charitable support made possible the purchase of telehealth monitors to expand our care and daily monitoring of high-risk heart failure patients remotely from the comfort of their homes.

Clinical Research Studies

This fund supports studies to evaluate treatment protocols. An approved site for National Institute of Health trials, NCH is involved in scores of local and national clinical research studies at all times.

Nursing and Education

Patient Navigators

Nurses support and coordinate care for breast, prostate, lung and pancreatic cancer patients. The program touches 3,400 patients annually.

Nursing Research Fellowship

Provides nurse researchers time, mentoring, and resources to investigate questions and improve care.

Kathy Reno Educational Endowment

Established by NCH’s retired VP and chief nursing officer Kathy Reno and her husband John Jartz, the endowment improves staff skills and patient care at NCH.

Nursing Education ADVANCE Scholarship Program

This scholarship program helps staff who wish to enter the nursing profession, as well as nurses seeking advanced degrees and specialty certifications.

Pecson Endowment for Nursing Excellence

Established by Rene Pecson, MD, and his wife, Ellen, this fund supports ongoing training, professional development and incentives for excellence among NCH nurses.
