You could be WIN-ning with NCH Wellness Center program

January 8, 2019

Front row: Will Brown, WIN Personal Trainer and Rosemary Weaver, WIN Dietitian celebrate the last week of class with WIN participants.

One year ago, the NCH Wellness Center launched the WIN Program – Weight management, Improved fitness, Nutrition awareness – a course that helps participants make lifestyle changes that result in weight loss, a stronger, leaner body and the ability to make better food choices.

Clinical Dietitian Rosemary Weaver, MPH, RDN, LDN explains how the program works and why you should sign up for the next session starting Jan. 17.

When is the right time to start WIN?

Many of us might wonder if it’s the right time to start a serious program for weight loss. Life can always get in the way and throw scheduling curve balls. The key is being emotionally ready for change. We have to try our best to prioritize time for exercise as well as dedicating time for planning good meals and snacks.

What makes WIN different?

The beauty of a concept like WIN is that we have the strong accountability and support of a group and instructors who are motivating to help us make good on the choices we’ve made toward improved health.

What if a participant’s past efforts to lose weight have failed?

It doesn’t matter how old we are or how many times we may have failed, we all have the capacity for health behavior change.

What does the program include?

It is 12 weekly 90-minute sessions: 45-minutes of group nutrition followed by 45-minutes of group exercise. It includes pre-, mid- and post-program biometric assessments using various scans that measure body fat, muscle and more. There are options for continuing the program after the 12 weeks, including group exercise and nutrition support. There is a special membership offer for non-members.

What do participants receive when they join WIN?

They get individualized meal plans and exercise prescriptions, ongoing feedback, monitoring/encouragement throughout the program, weekly class materials, a water bottle, a food/exercise journal and a WIN program T-shirt.

Who leads it?

It is facilitated by a registered dietitian and certified personal trainers.

What kind of results can participants expect?

WIN has been very successful in helping participants make behavior change, as evidenced by our post-program evaluations. About one third of our program graduates attend our regular support group – called WIN II – to continue on their health journey.

Participants have lost between six to 25 pounds in the 12-week program. More importantly, they have lost fat and gained muscle, as demonstrated by our biometrics using our Tanita scale and Styku 3D body scanner. Most have made considerable improvement in their overall nutrition.

When does WIN meet?

WIN meets on Thursdays from 10:30 a.m. to noon, or 5:45 to 7:15 p.m.
