Northwest Community Healthcare (NCH) announced today that it has received the 2018 Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence™ from Healthgrades, the leading online resource for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals. The distinction places NCH in the top five percent for clinical performance among nearly 4,500 hospitals nationwide.
“Northwest Community Healthcare (NCH) is proud to receive Healthgrades’ Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence,” says Stephen Scogna, president and chief executive officer, NCH. “Our first priority is patient safety and quality in all that we do. Our commitment to excellence is achieved through a clinical vision shared among our physicians, nurses and frontline staff.”
NCH is a recipient of numerous 2018 Healthgrades distinctions, including America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Stroke Care™, the Cardiac Care Excellence Award™, the Neurosciences Excellence Award™, the Cranial Neurosurgery Excellence Award™, and the Pulmonary Care Excellence Award™, among others.
“This award – along with our three-time Magnet recognition, Leapfrog quality grade of A, and other recognitions of note – reflects our combined commitment and ability to serve our patients and the community with the highest standards of excellence in quality care,” Scogna says.
From 2014-2016, patients treated in hospitals receiving the Healthgrades Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence had, on average, a 26.3 percent lower risk of dying (across 19 procedures and conditions where mortality is the clinical outcome) than if they were treated in hospitals that did not achieve this distinction. During this same period, if all other hospitals, as a group, performed at the level of Distinguished Hospitals for Clinical Excellence across these 19 procedures and conditions, on average 159,924 lives could potentially have been saved. For example, patients treated for respiratory failure at a hospital that achieved the Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence Award had, on average, a 24.5 percent lower risk of dying than if treated at a hospital that did not achieve this distinction. *
“We commend hospitals that have achieved Healthgrades 2018 Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence, demonstrating a steadfast commitment to high-quality care for their patients,” said Brad Bowman, M.D., chief medical officer, Healthgrades.
“Hospitals that meet these high-quality standards will continue to distinguish themselves with consumers making decisions about where to receive care.”
NCH also is a 5-Star Recipient of the following Healthgrades distinctions: Treatment of Health Failure; Cranial Neurosurgery; Treatment of Bowel Obstruction; Esophageal/Stomach Surgeries; Colorectal Surgeries; Treatment of Stroke; Treatment of Pneumonia; Treatment of Pulmonary Embolism; Treatment of Sepsis; and Treatment of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.
The 250 recipients of the Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence™ stand out among the rest for overall clinical excellence across a broad spectrum of care. During the 2018 study period (2014-2016), these hospitals showed superior performance in clinical outcomes for patients in the Medicare population across at least 21 of 32 of the most common inpatient conditions and procedures —as measured by objective clinical outcomes performance data (risk-adjusted mortality and in-hospital complications).
