A new way to see breast cancer

Breast tomosynthesis, or 3D mammography, is new type of digital mammogram that has been shown to increase breast cancer detection and reduce false-positive results.

Who should go 3D?

Anyone eligible for a mammogram can opt for a 3D mammogram. Physicians of women with dense breast tissue may recommend a 3D screening mammogram.

The 3D difference

While digital mammography is still one of the most advanced technologies available today, it provides a standard two-dimensional picture of the breast.

The breast is composed of pockets of dense tissue surrounded by fat and creates an image that can appear hazy. In addition, overlapping tissue makes it difficult to see tiny spots, called microcalcifications as well as other signs of early-stage cancer.

Our 3D mammography system uses sophisticated imaging technology convert overlapping images into separate, very thin, layers to create a 3D image of the breast. As a result, 3D mammography helps physicians locate some tumors concealed by overlapping tissue.

What to expect

The procedure is nearly identical to a routine mammogram, except that in mammography the machine is stationary, while in 3D mammography it moves around the breast gathering additional images in seconds.
