Putting the latest medical advances in diabetes care to work for you

The ADA recommends that all adults who are overweight and age 45 or older be screened for diabetes. A doctor may also recommend screening for adults younger than 45 who are overweight and also have one or more risk factors, such as:

  • A family history of diabetes
  • Belonging to an ethnic group that has high rates of diabetes, such as African Americans, Hispanics or American Indians
  • High blood pressure or hyperlipidemia—an excess of cholesterol or other fatty substances in the blood
  • Have a history of gestational diabetes, or have given birth to a baby weighing more than nine pounds

Avoid complications by learning about diabetes

The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that nearly 26 million people have diabetes. More than 6 million of these people don't know they have the disease.

Symptoms for Type 1 & Type 2 diabetes:

  • Frequent urination
  • Unusual thirst
  • Extreme hunger
  • Unusual weight loss
  • Extreme fatigue
  • Irritability

Other symptoms of Type 2 diabetes include:

  • Frequent infections
  • Blurred vision
  • Cuts or bruises that are slow to heal
  • Tingling or numbness in the hands or feet
  • Recurring infections of the skin, gums or bladder

Did you know that a positive approach to developing and maintaining a healthy daily lifestyle is key to the best possible treatment for diabetes? Personalized counseling is conducted by a registered dietitian who works with you to establish an appropriate meal plan.

Treating to Target with Insulin

In cooperation with your physician, certified diabetes educators (nurses and dietitians) will work with you to obtain good blood glucose control with minimal hypoglycemia. Education and initiation of the external pump is done on an outpatient basis by working with the patient and his doctor to help build confidence with therapy. The external insulin pump helps normalize blood sugar and gives patients more lifestyle flexibility.

Glucose Monitoring

The principles of glucose monitoring and instruction on the use of glucose meters are presented. Learn more about Glucose Monitoring

Medication Instruction

The proper use of oral medications, use of insulin pen devices and the drawing up and injecting of insulin is reviewed.

Outpatient Services for Women with Gestational Diabetes

Sometimes during pregnancy gestational diabetes can occur. Proper diet and glucose monitoring are taught in order to protect the health of the mother and baby. You will receive a free glucose meter and start-up supplies.
