Interventional Radiology

Main Content Title

At NCH, we provide you with minimally invasive, state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment procedures with our comprehensive Interventional Radiology Services.

Interventional radiologists (IRs) are physicians who specialize in minimally invasive and targeted treatments using imaging guidance. They use their expertise in reading X-rays, ultrasound, MRIs, and other medical images to guide fine needles or catheters through the blood vessels or other pathways to treat diseases non-surgically. With Interventional Radiology services you'll experience less pain, fewer risks and shorter recovery times for the following conditions:

  • Varicose Veins
  • Acute Spinal Fractures
  • Pulmonary Embolisms
  • Peripheral Arterial Disease

Treatments
Treatment 1

Vertebroplasty

A minimally invasive procedure to treat painful spinal vertebral compression fractures. Most patients treated with vertebroplasty will have complete or significant reduction of their pain.

Treatment 2

Uterine Fibroid Embolization

Uterine Fibroid Embolization or (UFE) is a non-surgical treatment option to shrink uterine fibroids and relieve symptoms.

Treatment 3

Varicose Vein Ablation

Varicose veins are a common medical condition. This procedure is fast, is performed while you're awake and typically allows you to return to normal activities the next day.

Treatment 1

Radiofrequency Ablation (RF Ablation)

Radiofrequency ablation is a minimally invasive technique to treat tumors in solid organs. Primarily used in the treatment of liver tumors, it can also be used to treat tumors of the lung, bone, and kidney.

Treatment 3

Chemoembolization

Chemoembolization is most beneficial to patients whose malignancy is limited to the liver. This technique allows for a treatment that can be focused on cancerous cells that have spread to the liver and does not expose the rest of the body to the chemotherapy.

Other Procedures

  • Deep Vein Thrombosis Therapy – Diagnosis and treatment of a deep venous thrombosis (DVT) to prevent pulmonary embolism (the clot breaking free and blocking blood flow to your lungs).
  • Prevention of Pulmonary Embolisms – Inferior Vena Cava (IVC) Filter Placement and Removal places an IVC filter into the inferior vena cava (a major blood vessel that returns blood from the lower body to the heart) to prevent blood clots in the legs from going up to the lungs. A blood clot in the leg is called a deep vein thrombosis (DVT). If the clot goes to the lung, it's called a pulmonary embolus (PE) and can be fatal.
  • Acute Spinal Fractures – There are two minimally invasive IR procedures to treat painful spinal vertebral compression fractures. These include vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty.
  • Cerebral Aneurysms and Arteriovenous Malformations (AVM), Liver Cancer – Interventional oncology greatly improves chemoembolization by injecting a chemotherapeutic agent into the artery and directing it to the tumor.
  • Determine precise locations before surgery – Neurological and Neurosurgical Applications can create 3-D brain images with bi-plane angiography, and can be used in patients with such neurological conditions as aneurysm and arteriovenous malformation to determine the precise location of the abnormality prior to surgery.
  • Cancer Therapy, Localized cancers that aren’t receptive to chemotherapy – Radioembolization, a new therapy, takes advantage of your body's anatomy to deliver radiation directly to the tumor. The radioactive particles, about the size of talcum powder particles, are delivered to the tumor via a catheter inserted in the groin and then advanced up to the tumor.
  • Chronic kidney failure - Can assist in dialysis graft patency and declotting procedures.

Interventional radiologists are board certified radiologists fellowship trained in percutaneous (through the skin) interventions using imaging guidance.
