Uterine Fibroid Embolization

Enter Title

A non-surgical option to treat uterine fibroids

Northwest Community Healthcare (NCH) provides you the option to treat fibroids with a procedure called Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE). Performed by NCH interventional radiologists, the procedure uses a minimally invasive technique to shrink fibroid tumors that appear on the muscular wall of the uterus.

Symptoms

Women who are experiencing the symptoms of fibroids will benefit from UFE treatment.

Symptoms include:

  • Heavy menstrual bleeding or abnormal bleeding between periods
  • Anemia
  • Pelvic or lower back pain
  • Bladder pressure or frequent urination
  • Enlarged abdomen

Each individual may experience symptoms differently. Many women with fibroids do not have any symptoms.

    What to expect

A small catheter is inserted near the groin and guided into the uterine artery using x-ray imaging. Particles are entered into the uterine blood vessels to cut off blood flow to the fibroid tumors, causing them to shrink. The entire procedure takes approximately one hour.

All UFE procedures are performed on an outpatient basis. Following the procedure you may experience pain, cramping, fever or nausea.

Follow-up with your gynecologist is required to track your recovery and the success of treatment. The majority of patients see a dramatic decrease in all related fibroids symptoms and the tumors have significantly decreased in size.

    Advantages

UFE is an alternative to surgical treatment options such as a hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) and myomectomy (removal of fibroid tumors).

    • One tiny incision, minimal scarring
    • No general anesthesia required, intravenous and local only
    • Approximately one week recovery
    • Preserves uterus
