Treatment & Care at NCH

Orthopedics

Orthopedic, joint replacement and sports medicine programs

The Joint Replacement Program at Northwest Community Healthcare (NCH) features orthopedic surgeons with decades of experience in providing orthopedic surgery. Our team performs more than 800 joint replacements every year using the latest technologies, including the innovative MAKOplasty® partial knee resurfacing, reverse shoulder and anterior hip replacement procedures.

In 2016, NCH earned the honor of being named a Blue Distinction Center for Knee and Hip Replacement from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois. This designation signifies that NCH met nationally established quality care and outcomes criteria developed with input from the medical community, and also met affordable healthcare cost measures.

At NCH, we’re here for you every step of the way.

Diagnostic imaging

Before a treatment plan can be created, multiple tests or imaging procedures may be needed to isolate and identify the exact location and nature of the problem. These diagnostic procedures can include:

  • X-rays — to view 2D images of internal tissues, bones and organs
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) — to look for damage or disease in a surrounding ligament or muscle
  • Computed tomography scan (CT or CAT scan) — to view highly detailed cross-section images of bones, muscles, fat and organs
  • Electromyogram (EMG) — to evaluate nerve and muscle function
  • Ultrasound — to view images of the internal organs
  • Laboratory tests — to determine if other problems may be the cause
  • Myelogram — to evaluate the spinal canal and nerve roots
  • Radionuclide bone scan — to see blood flow to and cell activity within the bones
