The NCH Wellness Center now offers ROCKTAPE - a unique kinesiology/sports tape that supports while allowing full range of motion. Click the questions below to learn more.

What is ROCKTAPE?

ROCKTAPE is a unique kinesiology/sports tape that supports while allowing full range of motion. It’s used to decrease pain, decompress tissue, and provide stimulus that improves body awareness. ROCKTAPE was developed to stick better to skin and last longer after being applied. ROCKTAPE is completely different from traditional types of sports tape in the fact that it stretches along its length (but not across its width), allowing it to contour around body parts and allows joints to move through a full range of motion. Traditional tapes have been used primarily to limit movement, but the goal of using ROCKTAPE is to encourage movement. ROCKTAPE is woven from a blend of cotton and nylon fibers in a pattern that allows it to stretch 180% along its length, but not at all across the width mimicking human skin. It uses an acrylic, latex-free, essentially hypoallergenic medical adhesive on one side while the other side may be printed with patterns or solid colors.

How ROCKTAPE Works

When ROCKTAPE is applied to the skin, it has a microscopic lifting effect underneath the skin and between the many layers. This allows the by-products created by inflammation to be removed more quickly. ROCKTAPE stretches more and allows more freedom of movement, and it also creates more of a “snapback” or recoil effect, which is important when taping is used in the context of movement.

ROCKTAPE can also be used to stabilize muscles and joints that have been sprained or hurt. Unlike braces and sleeves that constrain and reduce blood flow, ROCKTAPE can provide support and stability while increasing blood flow. Thus, the tape’s capabilities make it well suited to the repair of localized muscle groups.

The same science that is used to treat injuries can be applied to promote better circulation and lymph drainage for sports applications. By applying ROCKTAPE to specific muscle group, we are able to reduce muscle vibration, accelerate blood flow out of the muscles to encourage oxygenation and promote lymph drainage, which helps remove lactic acid. These functions provide the athlete with additional endurance and help promote recovery.

We believe that everyone needs to keep moving, but sometimes injury or pain can get in the way of exercise activities. Rock Tape is for people who experience muscular discomfort, have overuse injuries or need postural assistance.
