Midwife or OB – We’ll Let You Decide

Northwest Community Hospital is dedicated to helping guide you through pregnancy, childbirth and caring for your newborn. To meet the diverse needs of expecting mothers, we offer midwives and obstetricians, allowing you to determine what type of care is best for you.

What is a certified nurse-midwife (CNM)?

Our Midwifery Group is proud to have an excellent and diverse team of board-certified nurse-midwives that truly believe in our mission of partnering with women to empower them to be actively involved in their own health care. We strive to provide an exemplary holistic birthing experience with open communication with our patients and the rest of the team.

To earn the title of CNM, a registered advance practice nurse must continue their training in obstetrics and gynecology and pass a board examination by the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM). CNMs may specialize in pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum and/or well-woman care, making them an essential resource for new mothers.

What is an obstetrician?

Northwest Community Hospital obstetricians believe that all women should receive evidence-based and compassionate health care through all stages of their life. For new or experienced mothers, we provide a range of services to guide each and every woman through pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum care.

Obstetricians practice comprehensive gynecological care from adolescence to menopause. To practice as an obstetrician, individuals must graduate from medical school and complete four years of residency training on obstetrics, gynecology, gynecologic oncology, ultrasonography and preventive care.

Often, women choose to give birth with an OB/GYN they are already familiar and comfortable with. In addition, OB’s specialize in assisting in high-risk pregnancy in which the mother has certain health problems, is younger than 17 or older than 35, is pregnant with more than one baby or is taking certain medications. Northwest Community Hospital holds the highest designation of peri-natal care in Illinois and offers 24 hour obstetric and anesthesia care. Neonatology is also available for patients delivering at any age and high risk situations who require their consultation.
