Magnet Recognition for Nursing Excellence

We’re proud to have earned Magnet recognition for the third time in a row. It’s the highest level of recognition nursing services can receive. The Magnet Recognition Program® was developed by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, a subsidiary of the American Nurses Association, to recognize healthcare organizations that provide the very best in nursing care. The Magnet program is recognized as the gold standard of nursing excellence. Magnet status is granted to hospitals that exhibit exemplary patient outcomes and satisfaction, demonstrate a commitment to excellence in healthcare and attract and retain the best staff from all disciplines.

To date, only 8 percent of healthcare organizations in the nation hold this prestigious designation. NCH is honored to be one of them.

What Magnet Means for NCH Patients

Nurses play such an important role in patients’ and families’ overall healthcare experience. They are the primary source of care and support during some of the most vulnerable times in a person’s life. At Magnet organizations, nurses are experienced and attentive, spending more time at bedsides providing compassionate care.

What Does This Distinction Say About Our Quality of Care?

Organizations that earn the Magnet designation have been proven to have:

  • For patients:
    • Increased patient satisfaction
    • Lower mortality rates
    • Lower risk of falls
    • Greater patient safety and improved care quality
  • For nurses:
    • Decreased nurse burnout
    • Increased nursing satisfaction
    • Decreased nurse turnover
    • Increased nurse retention

We’re proud to provide quality, compassionate healthcare services to the people of the northwest suburbs. The achievement of Magnet recognition for nursing excellence affirms our mission to continually raise the standard of care for our entire community.

How Does an Organization Earn This Recognition?

To earn Magnet status, organizations must apply and undergo a multifaceted evaluation. They must also submit extensive documentation demonstrating how they meet Magnet standards. The thorough, lengthy process takes a minimum of 18 months to complete. The process includes extensive onsite evaluations and interviews with our staff, physicians and patients. The interviews also include NCH board members, shared governance councils, community members and hospital administration. To ensure that Magnet organizations continue to perform among the elite in the nursing field, they must reapply for this designation every four years and provide updates annually. NCH became a Magnet hospital in 2006 and we’re proud to have been re-designated every four years since.
