Neuromuscular Disease

More than two million Americans suffer from conditions that affect the muscles, nerves, or a combination of both (which we refer to as “neuromuscular.”) Conditions you might be familiar with that fall into the neuromuscular category include peripheral neuropathy and ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Our specialists have the expertise to treat those conditions and more, including:

  • Myasthenia Gravis
  • Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS)
  • Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (CIDP)
  • Autonomic disorders and muscle diseases such as polymyositis
  • Inclusion body myositis
Other Conditions We Treat
  • Small Fiber Neuropathy
  • Peripheral Neuropathy
  • Polyneuropathy
  • Multifocal Motor Neuropathy (MMN)
  • Diabetic Neuropathy
  • Chemotherapy-induced Neuropathy
  • Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease
  • Myopathy
  • ALS Motor Neuron Disease
  • Muscular Dystrophy
  • Myotonia
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Ulnar Neuropathy
  • Brachial Plexopathy
  • Lumbar Plexopathy
  • Parsonage-Turner Syndrome
  • Radiculopathy
  • Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Lambert Eaton Myasthenic Syndrome
Procedures We Perform
  • EMG Nerve Conduction Studies (EMG/NCS)
  • Neuromuscular ultrasound, for carpal tunnel syndrome and other related neuropathies
  • QSART
  • Skin punch biopsy for small fiber neuropathy
Detection and Diagnosis

Our neuromuscular specialists are dedicated to compassionate and comprehensive care, using the latest technology for diagnosis. We carefully gather patient histories, conduct in-depth physical examinations and perform additional studies that can include blood work and an electromyography and nerve conduction study (EMG/NCS) for initial functional testing of nerves and muscles. We offer specialized nerve function testing, including QSART, which is small fiber and autonomic neuropathy testing

Information obtained from these tests leads to accurate neuromuscular disease diagnosis and prognosis reporting, resulting in the development of a personalized treatment plan.

Treatment Options

Our experts work with skill, care and compassion to determine the underlying cause and to help alleviate neuromuscular symptoms by using the broadest range of medications and therapies available. We keep abreast of the most advanced treatment options to improve quality of life and at times reverse or cure the underlying disease. Our neuromuscular team uses a comprehensive multidisciplinary approach, and consists of the neurologist working when necessary with rheumatologists, endocrinologists, neurosurgeons, hand surgeons, physical and occupational therapists, respiratory therapists, speech therapists, neurodiagnostic technicians, and even genetic counselors. We also have a dedicated infusion center that offers IVIG, biologics and plasma exchange.
