Everything you need to know about hot stone massage

May 11, 2018

What is it?

Hot stone massage therapy is a unique, therapeutic massage method using hot stones to melt away tension, fatigue and discomfort. Smooth basalt stones are typically chosen for this service due to the assortment of shapes compatible with bodywork, and their ability to retain heat over a longer period of time. The stones are thermally treated in a hot water bath to create a comfortable temperature to warm through muscle tissues, tendons and ligaments.

Is it effective?

Yes. Hot stone massage is beneficial and often requested as a relaxation or deep tissue treatment. In addition, many people find the results very effective for soothing conditions related to arthritis, fibromyalgia, spinal stenosis, plantar fasciitis, chronic fatigue, depression, anxiety and much more. When the massage therapist slides a stone over landmarks on the body, the heat transfers deep into the targeted area. This creates a parasympathetic response while gently encouraging tissues to go back to normal formation. This is an excellent way for the body to naturally assist in its own healing with the use of passive therapy.

Is it uncomfortable?

Not at all. Hot stone massage is relaxing and the stones are very smooth. Most find it enjoyable and fall into deep relaxation mode. Like any massage session, please speak up if you want to adjust the temperature of the stones, pressure given during the session, etc.
