Social workers: the champions of mental health

Celebrating Women Physicians
Medicine is historically dominated by men, and women – particularly women physicians – have often faced challenges and obstacles that made entering the field more difficult. On February 3 each year, we celebrate the birth of Elizabeth Blackwell, the nation’s first woman physician, during National Women Physicians Day. The NCH Medical Group is proud to have 75 women who are surgeons, hospitalists, family practitioners, dermatologists, cardiologists and within many more subspecialties.
Tuesday, January 12 is National Pharmacist Day
The day focuses on the importance of pharmacists, and it honors how much they impact our health and well-being. NCH employs more than thirty pharmacists, working with inpatients and outpatients. To honor these professionals on the front line of health care, we wanted to introduce you to nine NCH pharmacists.

NCH physicians have been named to Chicago magazine’s 2021 Top Doctors List, a compilation of more than 350 physicians in more than 60 specialties selected by their peers across Chicagoland. This appears in the January issue of Chicago magazine, on newsstands now.

Spotlight on Perioperative Nurses
Operating room (OR) nurses, also called perioperative nurses and surgical nurses, are in charge of patients scheduled for surgery. OR nurses are specialized registered nurses (RNs) and, depending on the situation, may act as scrub nurses or circulating nurses. November 8 through14 is Perioperative Nurses Week, and to recognize the profession we talked with eight nurses at that might help care for you during a surgical procedure at NCH.
Breathe easier – Respiratory Care Week
Did you know respiratory therapy originated in Chicago? In 1943, the first group of inhalation therapists (now called respiratory therapists) started working with post-operative patients during training at Michael Reese Hospital. Nearly 40 years later in 1982, President Ronald Reagan issued a proclamation dedicating National Respiratory Care Week and, today, we recognize National Respiratory Care Week the last full week in October.
Spotlight on Physician Assistant Week
October 6 through 12 is National Physician Assistant Week. We’d like to introduce you to five NCH physician assistants. These valuable team members are trained to practice medicine using a curriculum modeled after medical school, and are required to complete 2,000 hours of structured clinical education to receive their PA degree.

Health holidays don’t only exist to raise awareness about the hundreds of illnesses and health issues people live with every day, but also to celebrate the doctors and nurses working tirelessly to find a cure and improve our health.

Recent world events have drawn a spotlight on healthcare workers, which is well deserved and appreciated. In honor of National Nurse Assistants Week, June 18 through 24, we are expanding that spotlight to introduce you to healthcare workers beyond doctors and nurses.
May 10 through 16 is National Hospital Week
This year we’d like to introduce a sampling of NCH team members in roles you don’t normally see on the front lines. Without these individuals and their departments, patient care would not be what it is. We are celebrating all the jobs that make a hospital—and healthcare system—whole.
